We spent the day at the Prairie Creek Redlands Park area. We hiked for three miles, admiring the giant redwoods again. We could have hiked further, but George realized around mile 1.5 that he had dropped his hat. So we turned around and found it on the trail.
I took a picture of the hat before I let him pick it up. It's in the foreground.
We discovered several trees with hollowed out spaces. This led us to thinking about which one we'd like to move into. There was a whole neighborhood available. Being a fan of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, I love to imagine survival scenarios. Of course, I would need a hatchet and a heavy tarp.
After we hiked around, we drove to the Elk Meadow and the Elk Prairie, two day use areas where elk allegedly hang out. Someone forgot to tell the elk to get to the day use areas in the daytime. We gave up and continued south on the 101, headed to Eureka for the night. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a small herd of deer, in a field - so near. There were about six in the herd. We pulled over to watch, and one agreeable chap raised his head, so I could take a photo. Thank you!
We have run out of adjectives to describe the beauty of the redwoods. At every turn in the trail, we want to take a photo.
Tonight we are in Eureka. We're staying two nights, so tomorrow, we will explore this town.
