Eureka is a Greek word meaning "I have found it!" This is the California state motto and the name of the town in which we are staying. Eureka is on Humboldt Bay, the 2nd largest bay in California. The town's fortunes have always been tied to the bay. First, gold was shipped out of Eureka. Very soon the shipping changed to lumber. This is where fortunes were actually made, as they cut down the forests and shipped the wood out. They also built a Victorian city. Fishing has also been a major part of the economy. There are some evil moments in the town's history. They cut down the redwoods. They massacred the native peoples, the Wiyot, and expelled the Chinese. Now there is a town that's pretty much all on the historic registry. We walked around Old Town, looking at the wonderful Victorian homes and buildings.
This mansion was built for lumber baron, William Carson.
This house is across the street from the Carson Mansion.
I would love to live upstairs in this renovated building downtown.
I like this seating outside the visitors' center.
There are two bookstores downtown.
Another lovely renovation.
This is a fun, small town. Population is 27,000. They have lots of antique stores and an arty vibe.
We have been watching some college football this afternoon and relaxing. Happy Saturday!
